Can I Still Ride My Bike During Tampa’s Safer at Home Order?

Cities across the country have issued stay-at-home orders to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. In Tampa, we have a “Safer at Home Order”. The order asks people to not go out unless they need to provide or access essential services such as food and healthcare. The order is not designed to keep everyone in their home all the time, but to only go out when social distancing can be done. This means to stay at least six feet from those around you.

How Does Tampa Safer At Home Order Affect My Ability To Cycle?

If someone in Tampa wants to ride their bike for fun, exercise or transportation, they can, but they need to practice social distancing and stay six feet from others while they are out. Tampa’s “Safer at Home Order” specifically mentions riding a bike as one of the activities that the order allows during the battle against COVID-19.

Ways to Cycle Safe While Riding During COVID-19 Pandemic

According to the Center for Disease Control, Americans can lower their risk of getting the COVID-19 virus by engaging in certain risk-avoidance procedures. This can apply to bike riders as well.

  • Social Distancing in Group Rides : If riding in a group, then stay six feet from other riders.
  • Social Distancing Riding Alone : Although there are fewer people on the streets, when you do come upon someone, keep the proper distance apart.
  • Don’t Ride with Anyone Who Shows Virus Signs: If your riding buddy isn’t feeling well and is coughing or sneezing, play it safe and encourage him or her to stay home until the symptoms go away.
  • Wipe the Surfaces of Your Bike: You might not think someone has touched your bike, but they might have. Whether it’s a drop of sweat, a cough or someone moving your bike, the surfaces of your bike can contain a virus so use a sanitizer to wipe them.
  • Wipe Surfaces Wherever you Go: If you get off your bike and go into a store or health facility, wipe the door handles and anywhere you sit touch or lean against. This will help you and those around you stay safe.

Riding your bike during this time can be a great stress-reliever and anytime you get exercise and that’s a good thing. However, it’s commonly understood how easily the COVID-19 virus can be spread, and the last thing you want is to go out in the community for some recreation or to get supplies and then get the virus.
