Common Injuries

Video Transcript:

Hi I’m Mike Hancock and today I want to talk a little bit about the most common types of injuries we see our clients come to us with after a car accident. The most common type of car accident is a rear-end collision statistically speaking. By far that’s the most common way that you’re going to be hit by somebody else. And the most common injury that results from a rear-end collision is neck pain and why do you have neck pain from a rear-end collision? It’s typically because you’ve sustained a flex and extension type of injury which is more commonly referred to as a whiplash injury and a whiplash injury is really nothing more than a sprain or strain of the muscles, tendons, ligaments in your neck and the definition of a sprain or strain is the stretching  tearing of muscles tendons and ligaments and so the reason you have neck pain most often after a rear-end collision is that your neck has flexed forward too much or backwards too much and that quick flex or extension of your neck has caused your muscles tendons and ligaments to either become stretched or torn and that can result in inflammation which then results in feeling of stiffness and loss of range of motion. It’s important soon after an accident for you to obtain the proper care to start physical therapy to either seek some form of medical treatment that will try to reduce the inflammation get your range of motion back and reduce the pain. Hopefully that information about neck pain after an accident helps you understand why you might be having the symptoms you’re having.
