Tampa Pedestrian Accidents Injury Attorney
According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, in 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. 487 of those deaths occurred in Florida. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes. 30% of the pedestrian fatalities occurred in crashes between 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. Almost 50% of all pedestrian fatalities occurred on the weekends. Alcohol involvement— either for the driver or the pedestrian—was reported in 47% of all fatal pedestrian accidents.
Florida traffic statutes specific to pedestrians can be found in Section 316.310, Florida Statutes. For your safety and the safety of our children, be aware of the following:
- Where sidewalks are provided, no pedestrian shall walk along the portion of a roadway paved for vehicular traffic
- Where sidewalks are not provided, any pedestrian walking along roadway shall, when practicable, walk only on the shoulder on the left side of the roadway, facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction
- The driver of a vehicle at an intersection that has a traffic control signal shall stop before entering the crosswalk and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the crosswalk
- At intersections at which traffic control signals are in operation, pedestrians shall not cross at any place except in a marked crosswalk, nor cross an intersection diagonally – no jaywalking
