Downtown Traffic Backups Expected
Get ready for Tampa to be invaded (No not by pirates)! Next Monday, Tampa will be hosting the College Football Playoff Championship at Raymond James. Expect to see Clemson Tiger and Crimson Tide fans all around town.
With a huge event like the college football championship there are innately going to be a lot more traffic than usual. One place we want you to definitely be prepared for traffic jams is downtown. Though the game is on Monday, it’s going to be a weekend full of celebration in Tampa.
City Hall spokesperson, Ashley Bauman said, “A lot of people are just coming into the city to be a part of what’s going on.” A big part of the celebration will occur at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. There will be three multi-act concerts that are free and open to the public this weekend. Eric Paslay will perform Friday night, Flo Rida is performing on Saturday and Usher will be performing Sunday.
Officials are expecting up to 30,000 attendees, despite the estimate of Curtis Hixon Park’s capacity being at 20,000. It all depends on the stage size, equipment and fire marshal. The advice is to come early and don’t expect to park near the entertainment. Officials are used to big events like this as Tampa has hosted multiple Super Bowls, Gasparilla every year and the Republican National Convention.
Poe Garage, near the venue will be closed to the public. So, they advise you not to put the park’s address into your phone as a destination as it will cause a major traffic jam that is dangerous and time-consuming. The security around the park is also expected to cause traffic delays.
To avoid a possible accident and serious frustration, we suggest taking an Uber, Cab, water taxi, bike or a street car. If you do decide to drive, park as far away as possible to where you can still walk to the park.
As far as all the weekend’s festivities, we want you to have a great time, but also remember o never drink and drive. If you plan on going to the game and tailgating, have a plan and know how you are getting home.
Have a great weekend in Tampa Bay!
