What Used Vehicle is best for your Teen Driver?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released new guidelines in regards to recommended used vehicles for teens. This is in light of safety improvements in vehicles trickling down to lower-cost cars, SUVs, minivans and pickups.
This tool from the IIHS is perfect for families deciding on either getting a new car for the family that will one day be driven by a young driver, or for families who are considering purchasing a used vehicle for their teen driver.
This year’s list includes 49 “best choices” that start under $20,000 and 82 “good choices” that start under $10,000. In this year’s list, all vehicle scores has small overlap front crash protection factored in. The safety requirements for side and head restraint ratings also increased.
David Zuby, the IIHS executive vice president and chief research officer said, “Good crash protection is more affordable than ever, so there’s no need to skimp on safety when it comes to a vehicle for a young driver.”
The prices of the used vehicles on the lists are based off of Kelley Blue Book’s estimates for private-party purchases near the IIHS headquarters in Arlington, Va. The lists follow some basic guidelines that are taken into account:
- Not a high horsepower: High horsepower and younger drivers are not the best combination. IIHS recommends to stick with a base engine for a teen driver
- Heavier, Larger Vehicles are Generally Safer: You will see no minicars or small cars on the list. Small SUVs are okay and weigh about the same as a midsize car
- Electronic Stability Control: All cars since models in 2012 are required to have this, but when buying used car this feature needs to be taken into account. It helps drovers maintain control on curves and wet roads.
Additionally parents should look at the vehicle’s crash test safety rating, the NHTSA rating and always check the car’s VIN number on nhtsa.gov/recalls for recalls. You might also want to look at the car’s front crash prevention systems and IIHS headlight safety rating.
