Insurance Rates Higher in Tampa Bay Area
Car Insurance Rates are Rising in Tampa. For more than just traffic offenders. You might be a safe, defensive driver. You might not have an tickets, citations or accidents. But those things do not keep you exempt from a possible car insurance rate spike.
Recently brought to light by Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, teen car theft is becoming an epidemic And it’s going to affect our wallets. Rates are rising between 5-10 percent across the Tampa Bay Area. This is according to many independent insurance agents. The attribution to this rise is grand theft auto crimes and general car theft in addition to vehicle crashes. Insurance group agent Laurie Laurenty say her clients are getting sticker shock when they hear their quotes. She said, I have to tell my customers that move here from out of state to sit down before I read them a quote because our rates here in Florida can be double what customers pay in other states.”
Pinellas county is the hardest hit in terms of car theft. Hedi Boyd, a St. Pete resident said, “We are paying the price for juvenile delinquency. It’s not fair. I work three jobs just to pay all of my bills. I’m a defense driver, but we all need auto insurance, so we pay the higher rate.” Tampa and Hillsborough have actually seen a decrease in car theft this past year.
Laurenty and others at insurance groups say that the only way rates will go down, is if the rate of theft decreases. One reminder they give clients is to never keep a extra set of keys in your vehicle.
