Turkey Deep-Frying Safety
Deep-Frying a turkey is definitely one of the most popular and delicious ways to cook a Thanksgiving turkey. Unfortunately it can be extremely dangerous if not done properly. Dozens of these accidents happen around the country every single year. Most of the accidents occur due to oil getting to hot, trying fry a turkey that is not completely thawed and frying a turkey to close to flammable items. According to the National Fire Protection Association, deep-frying turkeys was responsible for 5 deaths and over 60 injuries.In order to avoid accidents this year, we suggest the following tips to avoid a burnt bird and possibly a burnt body.
- Fry the turkey outside away from any structure, tree or deck.
- Thaw the turkey completely to avoid fire flare-ups when the bird goes in.
- Do not overfill the fryer with oil.
- Keep monitoring the temperature of the oil to avoid overheating.
- Always wear heat-resistant gloves or mitts when handling a hot fryer.
- Turn the burner off before submerging the turkey and turn it back on after.
- If the fire starts to smoke, turn off the gas line and remove the lid to let the oil cool down.
- Keep all children and pets away from the deep-fryer.
- Leave at least 2 feet of space if using a propane-powered fryer.
- Last but not least, try to use an oil-less fryer, such as an infrared fryer.
