Study Names Florida Most Dangerous for Pedestrians

According to a study conducted by the AARP and Transportation for America, Florida is the most dangerous state for pedestrians - with 5,163 pedestrians killed on Florida streets from 2000 to 2009. In addition, federal statistics indicate that Florida has annually been ranked as one of the top three states for pedestrian deaths since 2001.

There are several causes for the large amount of pedestrians killed around the state - including poorly maintained roads, the large amount of tourists and visitors that come to Florida and a warm climate that invites people to take walks outside all year round.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Although most motorists are careful and follow the rules of the road, pedestrians cannot always count on drivers to use caution. In order to avoid being hit by a car, pedestrians can stay safe by:

  • Wearing bright colors or reflective clothing when walking at night
  • Walking on sidewalks whenever possible
  • Facing oncoming traffic when walking in areas with no sidewalks
  • Paying attention to blind spots when walking near motorists
  • Making eye contact with motorists to ensure that drivers see them

Safety Tips for Drivers

Since safety on the road is a two-way street, motorists should do their part to ensure that they don't hit pedestrians. In order to do this, drivers can:

  • Drive slowly in areas with low visibility
  • Avoid passing a car that has stopped for pedestrians
  • Be attentive in areas with children, particularly when driving in neighborhoods with schools
  • Be prepared to stop when entering a crosswalk area

Injuries stemming from a pedestrian accident can be severe. If a non-motorist is injured due to an accident with a motor vehicle, the accident victim has rights and may be entitled to compensation for his or her injuries. Speak to an attorney to discuss your case and help you determine the best course of action.
